These are the most romantic sunset-watching spots in Budapest
While the season of warm summer evenings is almost over, you still have a few weeks to spot some beautiful sunsets over Budapest’s iconic landmarks. Thanks to the city’s excellent location, you do not even have to leave the city centre, but make sure you explore these hidden gems for a more unique experience.
Surely everyone is familiar with the best viewing spots for the Parliament, Gellért Hill, and the Buda Castle, but if you are looking for something off the beaten track, read on for Travelo‘s latest compilation to explore Budapest’s most romantic sunset-friendly places.
Buda Castle
When it comes to chasing the most breathtaking views in Budapest, nothing really beats the Buda Castle: places like the Fisherman’s Bastion need no introduction, but for something less mainstream, go to Tóth Árpád Promenade: one of the city’s most romantic spots will treat you with an extraordinary panorama over the Buda Hills. You will find another secret spot if you make your way to the castle walls between Sándor Palace and the Fountain of the Fishing Children: you will get the feeling that “the whole castle is all yours”.
Nehru Part
You cannot go wrong with the Danube Promenade on the Pest side, either: with those views on the Liberty Bridge and Gellért Hill, it is a great place for panoramas any time of the day and year. Located right next to the Danube between the iconic building of Bálna and the Boráros Square transit station, Nehru Part is a quiet green park with sheltering trees, pebbled paths, and plenty of playgrounds.
Feneketlen Lake
A little oasis right next to busy Móricz Zsigmond Circus in Buda, this park is easy to access and is very popular for its vast green areas, playgrounds, running track, and the 4–5-metre deep lake that is home to several ducks and turtles and will beautifully reflect the colours of a sunset.
Tomb of Gül Baba
The “northernmost Islamic pilgrimage site in Europe” went through a complete renovation two years ago and now awaits visitors with a beautiful rose garden, a free exhibition, and wonderful views over the Hungarian capital. The landmark is only a few minutes’ walk away from stop Margit híd, budai hídfő (tram 4/6).
Árpád Lookout
This lookout tower is a hidden gem in the outskirts of District 2 that gives you scenic views on the western and southern hills of Buda from a 360-metre altitude. It is only accessible through a short walk, but once you are there, you will see that it was worth the time and effort. Take bus 65 to Fenyőgyöngye and walk 1.4 km, or take bus 11, 111, or 29 to Verecke lépcső and walk 900 metres.
Park of Pope John XXIII (Szent XXIII. János pápa park)
The western side of Margaret Island and Árpád Bridge are excellent spots for watching sunsets, which is also the reason you should expect crowds here. A great alternative is this dog-friendly green park just a few minutes’ walk from the Tímár utca stop of suburban railway line (HÉV) 5.
